Adobe Media Player basics. About Adobe Media Player. Adobe® Media Player 1.7 is a next-generation desktop media player and management application. It provides high-quality video playback of streamed, downloaded, or locally stored Internet television shows and video podcasts. Adobe Media Player is built on Adobe® AIR™. For networks and content publishers, Adobe Media Player is a powerful channel for distributing and monetizing video content. It offers publishers control over branding, advertising and content integrity. Together with Flash® Media Server and Flash® Media Rights Management Server, Adobe Media Player offers an end-to-end broadcast and delivery solution for publishers, from independent producers to large television networks. With Adobe Media Player, viewers can do the following: •Subscribe to their favorite shows and have new episodes queued up as they become available. •Recommend content to other viewers. •Share content with friends by creating a personal RSS feed. •Manage and play personal videos. Content publishers can: •Easily publish video content. •Provide a branded experience with relevant advertising to maximize brand equity and advertising revenue. •Orchestrate playback of content and advertising using Adobe Media Orchestration Documents (AMODs), a SMIL-based format. •Protect your content. About Adobe AIR. Adobe Media Player is built on Adobe® AIR™. Adobe AIR is based on Adobe® Flash® Player, a ubiquitous, secure client environment for running rich media applications and content. AIR is a cross-platform runtime environment for rich Internet applications. Developers can use their existing HTML, Ajax, Adobe® Flex™, or Adobe® Flash® web development skills and tools to build rich Internet applications for AIR. AIR leverages lightweight, common web-language programming in both online and offline contexts. AIR is the layer between a rich Internet application—in this case, Adobe Media Player—and the operating system (Windows® and Mac OS®). AIR handles all communications between Adobe Media Player and the operating system. It is the mechanism through which Adobe Media Player stores and accesses viewer-downloaded media files and viewer data when viewers are online and offline. Adobe Media Player and RSS. Adobe Media Player uses Real Simple Syndication (RSS) technology to deliver and manage video content, branding, and advertising. It can read and subscribe to standard video RSS feeds, such as iTunes RSS feeds, and manage those assets on the viewer’s computer. In addition to supporting standard RSS formats, Adobe Media Player uses a set of specific RSS tags. Because the RSS format is flexible, other content aggregators simply ignore Adobe Media Player-specific tags in a feed and are usually not adversely affected.
